THE PNG SENIOR OPEN

The PNG Senior Open had its inaugural year in 2022. This tournament plays host to seasoned professionals that have proven themselves competitive on all of the big tours around the world. Having ‘National Title’ status on the PGA Australia Legends Tour, the tournament is a unique opportunity to watch and play with PGA senior professionals who have played in major events in Australia and overseas at the elite level (such as Senior, Harwood, Stoltz and Fowler). As well as still possessing the ability to play great golf they are happy to share their stories from the past and their golfing knowledge to help improve your game. The inaugural Champion of this tournament was golf icon Peter Senior after carding 8 under over three rounds of stroke play.

THE MOROBE OPEN

The Morobe Open has been conducted in Lae for almost 40 years. It is usually conducted in late April / early May and is the precursor event to the PNG Open. It is generally aimed to attract the younger golfers who are working their way through to the larger more lucrative events on tours such as The USPGA, DP World Tour and the Asia Tour. Played over four rounds of stroke play, local members get the opportunity to play alongside some of the most promising professional golfers in the South Pacific. Former Champions include Brad Burns, Adam Crawford and Steven Jeffress.

THE HUON OPEN

The Huon Open has been a fixture on the PNGGA Calendar for many years and, prior to the emergence of Covid 19, it was rating event for PNG Golfers that earned them merit points to be considered to represent Papua New Guinea on the world stage at events such as the South Pacific Games, World Amateur Championships and the Olympics. Post Covid, it is now more a celebration of golf open to all abilities. Played in teams of two over three rounds, each round has a different format that combine to provide the Champion team. Players from all across PNG converge on Lae for this Premier Event.

THE CARSON SHIELD

The Carson Shield (named in honour of long-time Lae Golf Club Lady stalwart Lila Carson) is the only ‘Ladies Only’ tournament on the PNGGA Calendar. Played over two days of stroke play, the Champion is crowned on their Nett performance. As was Lila’s way, this is to ensure that all ladies, regardless of ability, have the opportunity to be competitive. It is a great celebration of women in our great game.
